Belgium has pledged to resettle 100 refugees in 2013

Within the framework of the joint EU resettlement programme which was adopted in March 2012, Belgium has pledged to resettle 100 refugees in 2013.

In the past, Belgium has resettled refugees on an ad hoc basis on two occasions. In 2011, 25 Eritrean and Congolese refugees were resettled from Choucha camp (Tunisia) to Belgium and in 2009, the ad hoc resettlement programme involved 47 refugees from Iraq.

Upon arrival in Belgium, the refugees will be hosted for the initial period by Fedasil, the Federal Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers in Belgium.

The groups to be resettled will be selected on the basis of the priorities set by UNHCR: Congolese from the Great Lakes region, Iraqis who are currently in Turkey, Syria or Lebanon, Somalis and Afghans.
