SHARE Network and Ifri roundtable on COVID-19 impact and responses in France

Over the last months, ICMC Europe and its SHARE network have conducted quantitative and qualitative research on the impact of COVID-19 on welcome and integration for refugees and migrants across the EU and the responses that have been elaborated.

In this context, the SHARE Network and our partner : the Observatoire de l’immigration et de l’asile of the Institut français des relations internationals (IFRI) convened the roundtable “Welcoming migrants and refugees in times of pandemic: lessons learned from COVID-19”, which focused on the situation in France. The event, held online on 13 April 2021, brought together over 100 national actors from public institutions, academia and civil society working in the field of welcome and integration in France.

The roundtable concluded SHARE’s work on the impact of COVID-19, providing the opportunity to present the main findings for France of the SHARE network survey on the impact of COVID-19 on the reception and integration of migrants and refugees. In addition, the University of Toulouse 2 presented the preliminary findings for France of the “Apart Together” survey, which examined how refugees and migrants experienced the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event also highlighted the responses to the COVID-19 from associations, institutions, migrants and refugees, and corporate foundations. Presentations and discussions brought forward innovative practices that can be continued to tackle the many existing challenges related to the pandemic at the local and national levels – from interruptions to services to digital exclusion experienced by migrants and refugees. Some of the interesting practices mentioned were:

  • Associations adapting their activities to the new context (see the interesting practice from Entraide Pierre Valdo here).
  • The Sanofi Espoir Foundation’s project Soliguide, developed by the association Solinum and referencing all the services, initiatives and resources that are useful for those in need.
